On the one hand, I suppose this does give Sam a chance to do what he didn't manage to do at the end of S3 and save Dean? He's going to end up working with Meg, though, isn't he. :/ And I do not know how I feel about that, sigh.
I really, really just want some emotion back in my Show, though, and you're right, Carver has brought that in the past. I keep thinking of Mystery Spot, which is all about the boys being separated and yet they're more all-about-each-other than ever. Yes, let's cling to that. ;)
