Um, what the hell, Livejournal?

Apparently I had IP logging on. Some Googling has enabled me to turn it off, so you may all rest assured on that score.

But seriously, LJ, what the hell?

IDK, but that's the point of IP logging. I never understood why anyone in fandom would have it turned on - the idea is to see what kind of people follow you, like where they're from and stuff. So giving the country and whatnot is actually GOOD for IP logging. Helps with marketing to the right audience and stuff. However, I don't think fandom is an appropriate place for it, due to privacy issues. So, to me, the only weird thing is why anyone has it turned on in the first place; and if it's the default for LJ, then that is bad.

I used to have it on for tracing possible trolls and sockpuppets... IDK, read too much stuff on Ms Scribe early on in my fandom participation ;-) but turned it off long ago and am now glad that I did.

Interesting - I didn't know it could be used to find spam stuff at all! That makes some sense then why people had activated it. I couldn't understand before.

I think, I may have to check, I only have IP logging on for anon comments -- and I did that just as a way of tracking who the anon's may be. I think? I can't really remember my reasons, I did it so freaking long ago, LOL.

What's wrong with IP logging? That way you can tell if someone is making nasty comments anonymously, and they've previously commented while logged in, then you can tell who it is...
