So my grandfather was a mechanic in the army during WWII. He fixed aircraft (after accidentally being sent to work in the kitchen to peel potatoes - which he did without a single complaint 'cause that's just the kinda guy he was) and I'm no history buff, but I'm pretty sure the US didn't have a dedicated Airforce at the time. I think it was combined with the army or the navy. BUT YES. PLANES. NO BOATS.

This is totally my impression alone with no facts to back it up, but I don't think the different branches work together enough for a romance to develop. Also, I think heard_the_owl is right - the pilots were Navy to begin with. I think. I know the Luftwaffe was well developed and huge and the RAF were tiny and unbelievably heroic and clever, but I don't know about a USAF.

UNHELPFUL COMMENT IS UNHELPFUL. If I had time I would hit up Wikipedia, because now I am curious, but I am on the way to work.

I just looked it up on the USAF website, and apparently they were a branch of the army during WWII, the Armed Air Forces (which was also the case with the RFC before it became the RAF). But I would imagine there were also Navy pilots, because there still are Navy pilots in both the Royal and US Navies, so...

And if was J2 AU I have decided Jared would be the SEAL Jensen the Marine. Jared I have decided is more obsessive than Jensen and therefore could survive the Hell week SEALS go through. Because he would be laser focused obsessed on being perfect at every single physical challenge. Jensen, not so obsessive, more normal personality type therefore happy to chill with the Marines. I can so picture ALL of this. Must stop reading all these military force biographies.

BUT!!! Controversial inter-services romance! Something between the Navy and the Marines? Tensions are already high, because there is a bit of built-in animosity because of generally Marine badassery and the assertion that the Navy is only there to give them a ride to the fight. Plus, BOATS. And the taste of sea spray on skin. ...just sayin'. Good luck!

Everyone votes for Navy?! But the Marines are totally the badasses. And you know that JDM is a BAMF. I'm with writingpathways, if you're going for the inter-service it should be Jensen-Navy and JDM Marine.

Personally, I'd want them in the same unit and JDM is the tough as nails LT who's never taken advantage of his position until they brought in the pretty little noob. And then he just can't help himself.

I don't even read JDM fic, but I'm going to fall all over this when you're done, whatever you decide.

Air Corps, because those boys were wild and crazy and the "new kids on the block" (still) with the most cutting edge toys and a reputation for insanity. Like the Right Stuff and Top Gun with Swing Band soundtrack - *everyone* wanted to be them, and everyone hated them because they were the golden boys.
